ABOUT STERLING HEIGHTS

Located on the Clinton River, Sterling Heights is one of Michigan's most populous and of its largest cities. In addition, it is one of the state's most rapidly expanding urban areas. The city may be found in Macomb County, to the northeast of Detroit, by roughly 25 miles. Warren is to the south, Troy is to the west, and Mt. Clemens is in the middle (to the east). The region known as Sterling Heights was settled soon after the American Revolution. By 1880, Sterling Township was a thriving rural area full of farmhouses and fields of wheat, corn, and other crops as farmers took advantage of the area's good soil and settled there. After the railroad era began, Sterling Township was traversed four times daily by passenger trains on the Detroit and Bay City Railroad. After incorporating as a city in 1968, Sterling Township changed its name to Sterling Heights. Because there was already a town called Sterling in neighboring Arenac County, the name "Heights" was added to distinguish this new community from its namesake. Now an essential part of the Detroit metropolitan area, Sterling Heights is home to tens of thousands of commercial and industrial establishments.
